Irrigated Lettuce & Zuke Flowers

irrigated lettuce - Irrigated Lettuce & Zuke Flowers

Hello Farm Friends,

Hoping some of you have found a lake or river to float down this long weekend, however, Canada Day or not, the veggies must be harvested! Our CSA pick-up will go ahead as usual, but if you are away please let me know and we can try to arrange something.

I will be harvesting solo because Niamh deserved an extra day to enjoy her friend’s cottage. That means I appreciate folks letting me know ahead of time if they won’t be here Tuesday as it will save me harvesting more than I have to!

After a nice break from the heat, but not much rain to speak of, we have been weeding and laying out more irrigation lines to prepare for the hot weather ahead. Yesterday I was finally able to get another bed of carrots seeded, as well as more spicy greens and beans. The corn and cabbage we seeded is over eager to get planted into the ground, so hopefully we will get a little rain this week to make transplanting easier.

Everyone will be happy to hear that our peas are finally coming on strong and I think I saw some colour in some of our tomatoes already!

This week there are lots of tiny Summer Squash and Zucchini on the plants, but they haven’t reached the stage where you can’t turn your back for a moment without finding baseball bat sized Squash, hopefully we will get there soon, the Squash bugs are and cucumber beetles are definitely putting some pressure on them but the plants are looking healthy yet and I will try to keep an eye on that.

Note to folks who use the online store, I won’t be able to harvest on Saturday this week, so you will have to find me at the Stirling Farmers’ Market instead. I should be back up and running next week.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
