Knuckle Down News: Too hot to handle

IMG 5771 - Knuckle Down News: Too hot to handle

Hello Farm Friends,

Well it seems like we passed around the Solstice and crashed straight into a heatwave!

Today it is truly too hot to be in the field for any length of time so I asked Niamh to take the day off and I harvested as many greens as I could in the wee hours of the morning.

Over the weekend I was able to finally plant out the last of our Squash seedlings, and for the first time in years we got our melons planted mostly on time. Today I will focus primarily on hooking up irrigation lines between breaks in the slightly cooler house so we don’t lose them!

In exciting news our peas are just starting to come on and I’m crossing my fingers we will have enough to harvest for the CSA tomorrow and our Markets at the end of the week, if not tomorrow, next week for sure. Our Zucchini and cucumbers have also begun to flower and will also be along in no time if the sunshine sticks around.

Our field tomatoes need to be trellised and pruned already, but I think I will put off pounding 400 feet of posts ’till the temperature drops a few degrees!

Yesterday I saw the first signs of potatoes and beans poking up out of the ground and expect they will hurry along now.

The list of things that need to be seeded for second and third succession is getting long, but I hope we can do a big round of seeding later in the week to catch up a bit so we will continue to have lots of great variety as we move into Summer.

Also: there are still lots of garlic scapes to harvest if you don’t already have a favourite recipe, now is the time to find one!

Sincerely,
— Jenny
