Drought or Downpour

storm line - Drought or Downpour

Hello Farm Friends,

A few moments ago we had a brief downpour, but it is  right back to being too hot. I must admit, the weather this Season has been quite a challenge and it doesn’t seem like there is much relief in sight.

Our Spring crops have given in to the heat and getting our Summer and Fall crops established in dry soil has been difficult. Seeds don’t want to germinate, new transplants are getting cooked before they can establish properly and even our heat loving crops are struggling to take off. It is also difficult for us to work as effectively in the heat as we too begin to wilt a little, so it feels a bit like we are constantly playing catch up.

All that said, I know that if we just keep plugging away at it, reseeding, replanting, rolling out drip tape, and rejoicing when rain does come, eventually things will grow.

In the meantime, a few of the crops I was hoping to have ready for this week are not quite there, so I reached out to our friends over at Footstep Organics to see if they had anything they could spare for our Shares. Although I hate to buy items, sometimes it is preferable to fretting that the shares aren’t up to my standards, besides I’m always happy to give my fellow farmers some business.

One thing we can get excited about for this week is fresh garlic! It is just about time to do the big garlic harvest, but while we are waiting for that we can enjoy the first of the crop right away.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
