On-Farm CSA week 1: Beet the heat and Scape into bbq season!

Perhaps I’ve had too much sun, but I just couldn’t resist the puns today. Welcome to the first farm pick-up day for 2018, it is going to be a scorcher, but I look forward to seeing everyone!  The first city pick-up will be in a few weeks.

The pick-up is between 3 and 6pm at 251 Anderson Island Road. If you can’t make it you can always send a friend to pick-up for you or just let me know and I can throw your share in the cooler ’till you can get here.

For all of my new members this season, you’ll find the CSA is set-up kind of like a market table but with a menu. In order to cut down on plastic waste, we don’t pre-bag anything so you will want to bring smaller bags or containers as well as a shopping bag, basket or cooler to put everything into. Think loose greens.

I will stay close-by this week so I can introduce newcomers to the routine and welcome back everyone else in person. Because of the crazy heat I will probably set the vegetables up inside the walk-in cooler so they don’t just wilt in five minutes. That means you won’t see the table in it’s usual spot when you drive in, but don’t worry, you do have the right day!

The heat also means that some of the veggies may be a little strong, extra spicy radishes and potentially more bitter or spicy greens. If you are one of those people who can’t take the heat (yes I’m doing it again), try roasting or, even better, bbq’ing! Here are some links for inspiration:

This week’s share will include:

  • Radishes
  • Garlic Scapes
  • Sugar Snap Peas
  • Red Russian Kale
  • Beets
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Herbs: Parsley and Dill

We still have a few shares left so if you know anyone who might be interested tell them to drop by and check it out if they like, I will be happy to send anyone who brings a friend home with some extra garlic scapes!

See you tomorrow,
Jenny
