Garlic, Garlic Everywhere!

Hello Farm Friends,

Today is a beautiful day and although we didn’t get the rain we needed, we are very much enjoying this break from the humidity! 

We are also enjoying doing something other than harvesting garlic after spending much of last week jumping up and down on the digging fork trying to get it to go into the ground. It could have been worse, no tools were broken, our bodies are mostly recovered and the garlic, although on average a bit smaller than usual, still looks quite nice. Now we just need to get it all cleaned up and hung so we can reclaim some space in the drive shed!

Although I was sad to miss the Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market last week, I’m glad I had that extra time as I was still at it ’till Saturday evening and finished just in time for a surprise visit from old friends who were passing by. What better way to celebrate finishing a big job than dinner with friends, especially when you are lucky enough to have a partner who does all of the cooking and simply hands you a glass of wine.

The garden is not feeling quite as celebratory and we are still very much in need of rain. However, this week we will turn all of our attention to weeding, watering, pruning and feeding our struggling crops and I am confident with a little extra attention they will come round. The tomatoes in particular seem just on the verge of joining the party and I expect to have a few extra eager one’s ready this week.

CSA members your shares might be a bit on the light side this week, but I do have a beautiful crop of Not-so-Spicy Salad Mix for you to enjoy as well as a nice stand of escarole for a little something different. I’m hoping for cucumbers and maybe some zucchinis too, but haven’t had a chance to investigate quantities today so we shall see what tomorrow brings.
