Hello Farm Friends,
Hallelujah, a couple of clouds chose to release their rain over the farm yesterday!
Not enough to combat this heat, but enough to give us a fighting chance of getting our digging forks into the garlic beds and to pull a few of the rapidly growing weeds. The garlic is drying down quickly and is more than ready to come out of the field this week.
Happily so, as we have now taken over my living room to clean and string up garlic to avoid working outside too much while the air quality index is screaming High Risk at us.
Nothing makes working in high heat and humidity more fun than doing it with a mask on! I’m gonna be honest when I decided to be a farmer there were some challenges I didn’t anticipate and the air outside not being safe to breathe was one of them.
Because we have so much to catch up on around the farm, I’ve decided to take a week off of my Toronto Market. Many apologies to my Toronto customers, but I will be back next week with lots of fresh garlic and maybe even some tomatoes, fingers crossed.
Thank you to my CSA members for all of your kind words of encouragement last week. Some of you were kind enough to remind me that the point of CSA is to share the risk of the season with your farmer and that I shouldn’t feel the need to buy veggies from other farms. What a lucky farmer I am to have such supportive members, not all of the CSA farmers I have spoken to have had that experience.
This week I will have some adorable little green cabbages for everyone and the last of the garlic scapes. The first of the Summer Squash and some very ugly cucumbers will be in the swap bin for anyone who is brave enough. I will also harvest some little basil bunches in case folks want to make one final batch of garlic scape pesto with basil. My entire house smells of garlic, so it is all I can think about right now!
Sincerely,
— Jenny
