Hello Farm Friends,
The day got away from me so I will keep this brief.
I have two exciting things to share: the first is that Spicy Salad Mix is back on the harvest list! I swapped out a couple of varieties that were not growing as I would like, and the new mustard is perhaps a little toooooo spicy. I will let you be the judge, so please let me know what you think of it. For those who would prefer a less adventurous salad experience, I will harvest some little lettuces too.
The second is that we just might have sweet potatoes this year. My friend Arlette from Portico Gardens in Prince Edward County gave me some of her sweet potato slips to try and I have been waiting eagerly to check on them. Yesterday I just couldn’t wait any longer so I dug one up! To my delight there was a great cluster of purple sweet potatoes. Fingers crossed the others grew just as well, I think she gave me some white ones too. It is just a small patch, but maybe enough for our CSA at least.
Sweet potatoes aren’t related to potatoes at all – they’re “tuberous roots” (*not tubers, Peter) and grow like vines above ground. Before eating, they need to be cured so the sugars can develop and create that sweet flavor they’re known for. If all goes to plan, I’ll dig them this weekend and start the curing process next week.
Also a quick reminder with Octuber on doorstep, don’t forget to order your garlic π§ (also not a tuber) for planting!
Sincerely,
β Jenny
