Hello Farm Friends,
On this lovely Monday afternoon I finally got the call that our van will be back home tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing all of my Toronto customers again.
Thanks to everyone who placed garlic orders, I will be bringing them and as much of everything else I can harvest to the Market this week! If you would like to place an order, there is still time and still lots of lovely garlic.
Last week we had a very brief frost warning that had me out covering everything I could ’till the wee hours because I just wasn’t ready to say goodbye to our frost sensitive crops just yet. Especially when the weather was about to turn back to Summer, as it has this week. The frost never came, thank goodness, but neither did the rain I was expecting over the weekend, so here we are back to constant irrigation.
Because I know this last burst of Summer can’t last, I will be cutting down lots of basil this week, if any CSA members would like an extra bunch or two for pesto or freezing, let me know and I will make sure I harvest enough.
We are still waiting on our final planting of beets and carrots, but I noticed that an early bed of carrots which I had given up on due to poor germination and an overabundance of weeds has been steadily growing and now that the weeds have died back I may be able to get a harvest out of them after all. Because these carrots haven’t had any irrigation, I expect them to be a bit fibrous and therefore may be best for cooking rather than fresh eating, but I will give them a good soaking this evening and see how they look. If they are decent, you will see them in your shares tomorrow.
I will also see if I can get another harvest out of the corn, some of it really wasn’t mature enough last week so maybe we will have better luck this time round.
Our salad mixes are still at least a week away, but lots of our other Fall Brassicas are looking lovely. The Dinosaur Kale and Rainbow Kale are especially stunning and I’m enjoying this Sprouting Broccoli even though there is only enough for a few bunches each time I harvest.
This week we have some cute little radishes ready, and there may be a good crop of cauliflower on the horizon too!
Sincerely,
— Jenny
