Knuckle Down News
Hello Farm Friends,
Over the next few days it seems like we will be getting a false Spring so I thought it was a good time to let everyone know that you can now also sign-up for our Spring CSA.
For those of you who, like me, are impatient for greens as the weather begins to warm up, good news, you don’t have to wait much longer!
Our Spring CSA will be a collaboration of SSmall Spade Farm and will run for 8 weeks starting on April 10th or 11th depending on your pick-up day.
By collaborating we will be able to offer more variety as well as three different pick-up locations:
1) Knuckle Down Farm – Friday afternoons
2) Small Scale Bakery (Belleville) – Friday mornings*
3) Small Spade Farm (north or Stirling) – Saturday mornings*
*if you’d prefer pickup at Smalls Spade or Scale, you may wish to sign up here.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email!
Despite all of the snow still on the fields, we already have lots of little green things growing under lights and in the greenhouse. As the days begin to lengthen, with just the smallest amount of protection from the freezing temperatures our earliest crops will wake up quickly.
The trick at this time of year is keeping an eye on the rapidly changing temperatures inside the greenhouse. Even when the temperatures are below freezing outside, blue skies can mean the temperatures inside can easily get way too hot. Without automatic doors or windows, if I leave the farm I have to rely on my family to open and close things for me.
Thankfully, Ernest isn’t afraid to wield a mallet when things are getting too hot and the doors are frozen shut! Peter, of course, upon being left in charge of opening and closing, proceeded to find a way to make my temperature sensor send alerts to our phones, which is pretty convenient. Thanks Peter!
Of course when the temperature dips below -20, there isn’t much I can do so let’s hope we’ve seen the last of those nights. Maybe one day the farm will be able to invest in a more robust heating system so that we can reliably keep even our more sensitive early seedlings safe. But there are a few things ahead of heating on our list at the moment, so for now, it’s finger crossing and shuffling things back into the house when needed!
Sincerely,
— Jenny
