Hello Farm Friends,
It seems like June didn’t want to be outdone by July and I’m not gonna lie, I prefered when it was imitating May!
I’m pretty sure my staff are looking forward to having a Canada Day in the middle of the week this year, as there are only so many jobs we can do while hiding from the burning sun. Today we are catching up on some seeding, hopefully tomorrow there will be more of a breeze and a bit of cloud cover. Sonora brought a stash of freezies to keep her going and is kind enough to share, so moral is still pretty good.
With days of above 30 degree weather on the way, we spent the morning harvesting so many heads of beautiful lettuce before they all get bitter in the heat. Hopefully everyone will be happy to eat lots of salad this week!
In order to share the salad wealth, I will be making a visit to the Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market this Thursday. If you are in Toronto, roll on over and say hello, I can’t be there every week this year, but I will be there when I can and I would love to see you.
The Spinach is likely done for a while, just too hot, but our Swiss Chard is looking gorgeous and will be gracing our CSA boxes this week, we harvested lots of Bok Choi before it bolted and I discovered that if you sear it quickly to make it a bit charred around the edges and then steam it for a few minutes it is extra delicious! Here is a recipe link that explains what I mean: 10-Minute Sautéed Baby Bok Choy
New to the table this week will be our favourite edible UFO, Kohlrabi! If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting this vegetable I hope you are as delighted by it as I am.
Sincerely,
— Jenny
