Mantis and Garlic

I guess this is the time of year when the Praying Mantis reaches maturity because we have been seeing them all over the farm! Munching on pests, guarding the garlic, keeping an eye on the cucumbers. I can’t ever get over what cool little creatures they are and I always love spotting them in the garden.

The past week flew by in a blur of harvesting and weeding and nursing. I am happy to have had a few extra helpers big and little. Among them a gauntlet gloved thistle puller (thanks for leaving the gloves Catherine!) and some pint sized cherry tomato harvesters.

I am happy to report that last weeks rain has indeed meant we have some good germination on our fall crops and Kayla and I were able to get some lettuce and swiss chard planted. The carrots that did germinate this spring will hopefully be big enough to harvest this week and the second planting of beets are sizing up now, hopefully there will be potatoes and peppers coming along soon too.

During these hot days, when salad greens are scarce Peter and I have been enjoying delicious Raita inspired cucumber tomato salad with a yogurty lemon and garlic dressing. If you want a good recipe for inspiration I took mine from Smitten Kitchen https://smittenkitchen.com/2016/05/cucumber-yogurt-raita-salad/ it is delicious over a nice simple dal and rice!
