Sprouts & Endings, Carrots & Mornings

Sprouts 1 - Sprouts & Endings, Carrots & Mornings

As we near the end of October, I am enjoying soaking in these last beautiful sunny harvest mornings.   Although we haven’t had too many cold cold nights just yet, I know the end is nigh. This week will be week 18 of our season and I have been back and forth about whether or not to wrap things up a week or two early. Today, with the sun shining down, it seems easy to imagine another two weeks of healthy harvests, but November can turn cold quickly and I don’t have a good supply of storage crops for you this year.

In the end, I have decided to split the difference and we will wrap the season up one week early, which will make next week our last pick-up for 2019. As thanks for your flexibility and understanding, I will be sending each of you an email with a few ‘week twenty replacement’ options to choose!

We aren’t quiet done yet though and this week I am excited to say that our last planting of carrots are finally big enough to bunch. Thankfully carrots don’t mind the cold and the few frosts we have had just make them sweeter than ever.

Also new this week we will have pea shoots and broccoli side shoots! Pea shoots can just be tossed raw into any salad or sandwich or on top of a soup. Both shoots and broccoli are perfect for stir-fries. The leaves on the broccoli are nutritious and delicious, so don’t throw them away, just toss the whole thing into the pan.
