We had a nice rain on Friday evening to finish up our busy week and although we have now been plunged back into heat and humidity the vegetables are happy.
Of course, when the vegetables are happy so are the weeds, so Katie and Sonora are trying to get ahead of them while I hide in the house and type.
As we turn the corner into July, lots of crops are just on the cusp of readiness. We have green tomatoes everywhere (which we will be able to see once we get a chance to do some pruning!) Tiny cucumbers and zucchinis are also beginning to appear. The eggplants and peppers didn’t like the cold nights we had in June, but they will come around now and I definitely saw some flowers.
The potatoes, which were a bit slow to come up have now suddenly exploded and I’m still crossing my fingers for our second plantings of beets and carrots.
Some of our early beets will be heading to CSA shares this week along with some beautiful collard greens and the last of this round of salad turnips.
We still have lots of garlic scapes (available to everyone in the Homegrown Hamper this week, or the Stirling Market on Friday). Fresh Garlic will be coming soon!
I hope everyone is keeping cool.
Sincerely,
โ Jenny
