Cover Crops and Calendula

Cover Crops - Cover Crops and Calendula

Hello Farm Friends,

This week so many things seem on the verge of being ready to harvest, Beans, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Peppers and of course all of the Garlic!

Some of these will be showing up in your CSA Shares or at the Market in the Village in Stirling, but I’m taking the week off of Market in Toronto.

It’s probably for the best this week, with all the rain and heat there is a long list of things to catch up on, not to mention the some 4,000 garlic that need to be harvested!

A few weeks ago I mentioned an experiment of seeding some buckwheat and Sorghum-Sudan grass as a cover crop between the squash. I thought some of you might want an update, I know some farmers and generally curious folks read my newsletter.

My takeaways are that given the weather conditions everything grew like mad and I got a beautiful cover crop that definitely crowded out the weeds. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to weed the beds where the squash itself was growing  so I still have lots of weeds there which crowded the Squash a bit.

The Squash plants for the most part look healthy and happy, though a few of them got damaged with the mowing. Next time I would seed the cover crop a week or so earlier so that I could mow it down before any Squash Vines were trying to move into those beds. I don’t see a lot of pest damage, but we will have to wait and see how everything looks once we finish weeding between the plants.

I got a few pictures before we mowed and I will post an after shot as soon as we have one.

Another fun surprise this season is all of the beautiful Calendula that came up from the old seed that Urban Harvest sent home with me. If you are interested in making anything with Calendula, or would just like a cheerful little bouquet let me know! It really is like sunshine in a flower. Urban Harvest, I will try to drop some by the store for you!

One last update, and I’m sorry I didn’t get a picture, but our Killdeer eggs hatched and I counted all four chicks scurrying after their parents as fast as their adorable little legs could carry them. Hurray for the protective camouflage of Celery.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
