Hello Farm Friends,
I’ve got some exciting news to share with you this week. I have a brand new farm sign! From now on, when someone arrives here at Knuckle Down Farm they will know they have come to the right place despite the gardens being hidden from view by our big drive shed.
Some of you might know that I volunteer as a board member for an organization called Harvest Hastings. Well it turns out that one of the perks of volunteering with an organization that has a mandate to build a strong local food community is that you meet great people. As it turns out, one of those great people is a fantastic carpenter. Huge thanks to David, our farm sign is more beautiful than I ever imagined. Not only that, but another board member Sam, of Stirling Kitchen Catering came over last week and helped David install it for me.
David lives in Bancroft, so when I offered to repay him in vegetables he suggested instead to pass the vegetables on to Sam who can use them as he launches his new business. That is what it means to be part of a community folks. Thanks so much David and Sam!
If you are in Hastings County and/or Quinte West, and are now wondering why you too aren’t on the board (or even just a member), just get in touch, we would love to have more farmers or local food supporters join us.
While I’m on the topic of good people, my mum and my sister took a couple of hours out of their so-called vacation this morning to help me with the seemingly never ending garlic harvest and now, with the help of a few other extended family members are keeping my kids entertained at the beach.
Farming is not an easy life, but it sure is easier when you have supportive family and friends.
With the epic garlic harvest still ongoing, I don’t have much else to report from the field today. Only that all the rain, followed by all this sunshine means the crops are coming along great. We will have some new things to harvest this week, including the first of the Beans, Fennel and maybe some New Potatoes by the end of the week!
Toronto friends, I will be at the Dufferin Grove Market this week, but will then need to take a few weeks off so come stock-up while you can.
For those of you who live nearby, remember you can always order on our online store for pick-up on Saturday mornings if you can’t make it to the market. Besides then you can admire our new sign.
Sincerely,
— Jenny
