Hello Farm Friends,
Just when I was starting to think I should move my rather underutilized irrigation lines to our newer planting, nature came to my rescue and I can put it off a while longer. Happily it looks like after today we will get a few more weeks of warm weather now that everything has had a good soak.
Stephanie and I snuck in a good weeding session this morning while it was wet, but not too wet, giving a bed of very weedy young carrots some room and now she is getting to work on our neglected greenhouse which really needs some attention if we are going to put anything in there this Fall.
Although the tomatoes in the field are starting to succumb to blight, I hope we can get a few more weeks out of them and perhaps we will see if we can prune back some of the more blight resistant plants once things dry up a bit. Growing heirlooms in the field is always a bit of a gamble, but we have had some beauties this year even if it does come to an end a little earlier than I would like.
Over the weekend I began seeding some of our empty beds with a covercrop of oats and peas. This should add some nutrients back into the soil and provide a little protection over the winter as well as feeding the soil microorganisms who help keep our soil healthy. Unless the Winter is especially mild, the oats and peas will die back before the Spring making those beds available for Spring planting.
Funny to be thinking about Spring when there is still so much to do for this Season, but I usually wait too long to get a decent Fall Cover established, so I’m happy to have at least a few beds seeded!
Sincerely,
—Jenny
