September Squash Update

big Squash - September Squash Update

Hello Farm Friends,

Remember the experiment I did with putting a cover crop of buckwheat and Sorghum Sudangrass between my squash rows? I took a great before picture and my plan was to mow down the cover crop, weed between the squash plants, take an after picture and let the Squash take over.

Well sometimes things don’t go to plan. I did mow down the cover crop, but then it rained and rained and we never weeded out the squash beds before the weeds and the Sorghum Sudangrass had grown so tall that I couldn’t even see if there was still Squash in there! If I were to do it again, I would seed buckwheat alone, or try a lower growing cover crop that could co-exist with the Squash.

This week I will try to fight my way amongst the weeds and see how much Squash I can find as I’m sure some of it is ready for harvesting. Fingers crossed there is at least enough for our CSA members to enjoy. Next year, I will try something different!

In more positive news, I finally harvested all of the Onions and they are curing in the sunshine and our late plantings of Beets, Carrots and Potatoes are growing well. This week we will start harvesting some lovely Savoy Cabbage and there should be some Napa Cabbage, Kohlrabi and Daikon type radishes coming along soon too.

We are hoping to get some lettuces that are waiting in pots planted this week and there is a decent crop of Spinach coming along to round out our Fall greens.

Lots to look forward to yet with all this September Sunshine!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the Stirling Market in the Village on Friday, and have closed the online store for this weekend but I will be back next week!

Toronto customers I will be at Dufferin Grove as usual.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
