Hello Farm Friends,
Today, another holiday Monday, I stepped outside to consider whether I should get a head start on tomorrow’s CSA harvest, or just take the day to rest as I am feeling a little under the weather.
As I walked around the garden with a frigid wind making the idea decreasingly appealing I began to wonder about the phrase “under the weather”. It turns out, that the idiom originated on sailing ships, sailors who were feeling unwell would be sent below deck to recover where they would be literally under the weather.
Standing in our windy field, especially when the plastic on the greenhouse is flapping noisily I often think oh, this would probably be great sailing weather! Today though, I decided that I would rather be below deck, or in this case drinking warm tea inside my house.
The harvesting can wait ’till tomorrow.
If you are feeling hale and hearty, I hope you are out enjoying the brisk fall weather or, if not, like me, you are enjoying a nice cozy holiday Monday with your favourite warm beverage.
Sincerely,
Jenny
