Hello Farm Friends,
We are very pleased to be saying goodbye to the way too hot weather and hello to the little bit of rain we have had. Unfortunately, it is also time to say goodbye to my right hand woman for the Summer months, Niamh. Many of you may not have had the chance to meet her, but she has been quietly working away behind the scenes, never complaining about the work, the thistles in her fingers or the ridiculous heat.
Thank you Niamh, it would have been so much harder without you!
Some farmers I know don’t grow beans because they are so time consuming to harvest, I usually deal with this problem by sharing the tedium with my staff. This year our beans have been so slow that Niamh almost got away without having to harvest them once! That didn’t seem fair so today we finally did our first, admittedly very tiny bean harvest, the rest will be up to me I guess.
In other news, this afternoon I was heading out to visit Small Spade Farm, who had very kindly offered us some zucchini that were producing as zucchini should, with an overabundance, when my van began to take issue with my plans. As a result my plans and the van had to be abandoned promptly and instead I had a lovely evening stroll.
Tomorrow I will call the mechanic, but there is a chance I will be absent from both of our Markets this week if it isn’t a quick fix. Either way, I’ll be away from the Stirling market on Friday.
There is one very exciting bit of news I wanted to share though, we finally have a bed of perfectly germinated carrots! After so many failed attempts this year, I almost didn’t believe my eyes when I saw them. Better late than never I say, if we are lucky they will be ready to harvest before the ground freezes!
The rain and cooler weather has also begun to bring a little green back into our greens. The Spicy Salad Mix has germinated, Spinach and Lettuce mix have been transplanted and the seeds arrived today for a final batch of salad turnips.
September, I think I’m almost ready for you.
Sincerely,
— Jenny
